C3-R Pioneering New Treatments in Keratoconus

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

In the past treatments for Keratoconus generally meant an invasive procedure that required transplant of the cornea. A new day has dawned and the treatments for Keratoconus are showing positive & incredible results without the invasive technique of a Corneal Transplants. In the past receiving a corneal transplant often meant longer recovery times, possible infections, and pain after surgery. Now we have a treatment that can slow or stop the progression of Keratoconus, and has shown reversal of damage Keratoconus has caused to the eye with little to no recovery time or pain.

This new treatment? C3-R®. Also known as Corneal Collagen Cross-linking with Riboflavin. This simple procedure takes only about 30 minutes, can be performed in the doctors office and has little to no recovery time. C3-R® has shown excellent promise in treatments for Keratoconus. In some cases this procedure has even repaired damage that has already been done to the cornea by Keratoconus.

C3-R® is performed by applying a special solution to loosen the epithelium and installing the Riboflavin drops, then a special UV light is used to activate the medication. The total procedure takes around 30 minutes and continues to strengthen the cornea over 3 to 6months.

It is performed two ways Epithelium on and Epithelium off. The Boxer Wachler Vision Institute uses the Epithelium on technique. This means a solution is used to loosen the Epithelium so the Riboflavin drops will penetrate to the cornea. Since the Epithelium is not removed there is little to no pain during recovery. The effectiveness of removing the epithelium has not been proved to improve the results. The procedure with the epithelium still intact however proves to be less painful for the patients, the cornea is strengthened and the progression of Keratoconus is halted.

Benefits of Using Epithelium On Procedure-(Trans Epithelial) C3-R® for Treatment:

Reduced Recovery time

Less Pain

Non-Invasive

Keratoconus Halted

Increased improvement of vision

Keratoconus: Understanding Your Diagnosis & What it Means For You

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

While the diagnosis of Keratoconus can be unsettling for anybody you should first know the facts before thinking of going blind. Although corneal transplants are not high on our list of things to do, they were an effective way to save the sight of suffers of Keratoconus.

New Advancements in Technologies have improved results for many who face this degenerative condition each day. However before we can even look at treatment options it is important that you understand the diagnosis and what it means for you.

Diagnosing Keratoconus:

Keratoconus is a change in the shape of the cornea. Keratoconus causes the cornea to become cone shape distorting the vision of the sufferer. In its mild forms Keratoconus is treated with corrective lenses or Hard contact lens. Diagnosis of Keratoconus is determined through corneal mapping also known as a Topography mapping.

In the early stages of Keratoconus symptoms are minimal and are usually detected through regular eye exams & patient history. Generally Keratoconus starts in one eye and later moving to both. Patient family history of Keratoconus is usually detected in a new diagnosis.

Symptoms of Keratoconus:

Double vision

Squinting to see

Frequent changes in prescriptions

Irritation

Photopobia [sensitivity to light]

Ghost images

New Technology & Treatments for Keratoconus:

Past treatments for Keratoconus consisted of Hard contact lenses, and corneal transplants. Corneal transplants are invasive corrective eye surgery that had long and painful recovery periods. New technologies have had positive results in the treatment of Keratoconus without invasive surgery.

INTACS a form of treatment in Keratoconus require no maintenance, and provide little to no pain during recovery. The procedure is done in the doctors office and generally takes about 30 minutes to complete. Combined with C3-R or CK, INTACS have provided positive results in stabilizing the degeneration of sight caused by Keratoconus.

Although Keratoconus is a serious condition there is hope for sufferers today. New technologies are providing many treatment options and positive improvement in the quality of life for all those that sufferer.

Finding Hope with Keratoconus

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

For years researchers and Doctors have been looking for effective ways to treat patients with keratoconus. In the past the options were very slim with little hope for reversals or healing the corneas. Often patients had to receive corneal transplants to get relief from diseases like Keratoconus. However now they are finding new and less invasive ways to correct the progression of keratoconus.

Keratoconus is caused by free radicals which invade the eye and create a reactive species which break down and cause weakness. The weakness causes the cornea to herniate causing keratoconus. The progression is not over night but over years and the effects of keratoconus can be debilitating for the patient leading to blindness. In the beginning of the disease there are little symptoms and patients often overlook a problem. The condition often strikes one eye first later spreading to the second eye by the time a problem is detected.

Now there is a treatment called C3-R® which can strengthen the cornea in the places that are weakened and give the reverse effect of the damage done by keratoconus. The treatment is relatively easy with only 30 minutes to apply and the cornea is strengthened over the next 2-4 months. Many patients only need one application, while more severe cases may require two.

The use of C3-R® or Corneal Collagen Crosslinking with Riboflavin has been very effective in recent years and can give tremendous improvement to the patients vision. In addition to C3-R® the doctor can use Intacs, and/or CK to additionally improve the sight of the patient.

A few symptoms of Keratoconus are:

Itchy eyes

Excessive Rubbing

Visual disturbances

Visual discomfort

Glare halo

Squinting

Seeing double

Keratoconus Patients: Research & Tips to Remember When Looking for Treatment

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

Researching treatments of Keratoconus is no different than researching any other condition. First you must fully understand the condition before you can go any further. There are several places that will give you the perfect technical terminology for Keratoconus.

But the truth is you probably don’t want to hear all that. Looking for an explanation you can understand is very important. Just as important as finding a doctor who will explain it to you in terms you can understand.

Tip 1: Be sure that your physician is a doctor for the patients: Don’t be afraid to ask questions. If they give you an answer you can not understand – Ask again! It is your health on the line. It is important that you know what to expect and what is going on with your body, not whether you upset your doctor.

Finding Reliable information is a big step to researching your condition. You must feel comfortable with the level of experience & education your source has. Don’t be afraid to ask, or research them. This will ensure you are getting the best quality and the newest information available.

Tip 2: Be sure to ask for all your treatment options: No matter how old or new they maybe it is [once again] your health on the line. Be sure you have explored every option and are comfortable before perusing any treatment option.

Visit more than one office. If you are trying to determine where to go for treatment, don’t just accept what you read or what others say. Explore a few offices. Walk in, how do you feel there? Is the staff pleasant? How do they feel about you being there, are they open? Do they answer your questions without hesitation? Researching your treatment center should not be just about what you read, it should be about how you feel- and your comfort where you are being treated.

Tip 3: Be sure to ask about the staff’s experience: asking how long they have been there is a good conversation starter. Don’t just pick your treatment center based on your friends referral. Take your time and be sure its the clinic for you. Take an active part in your vision care.

Living With Keratoconus: Positive Results That Last

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Losing our vision is scary. Mainly because we fear things we do not know. However there are ways to stop the progression of Keratoconus, and sometimes reverse its damage. In the past years when someone developed Keratoconus the prognosis was eventual blindness, and doctors tried to delay it as much as possible. Quite often patients were given Cornea Transplants.

Now there are many options for people with Keratoconus. Cornea Transplants or Blindness are not an eventuality. So what is this miracle treatment you ask? The procedures that have been developed for the Treatment of Keratoconus in recent years are INTACS, and C3-R®.

INTACS:

What are INTACS?-

Approved by the FDA for treatment of Nearsightedness and Astigmatism associated with Keratoconus these small inserts are used when contacts & glasses no longer provide functional vision or have been uncomfortable to wear. INTACS are corneal inserts used to stabilize the cornea and improve the shape of the cornea providing better vision and comfort in glasses or contacts.

INTACS procedure-

The procedure itself takes little time, and is significantly less invasive than the prior corneal transplant treatment option. INTACS reshape the cornea giving a better quality of vision and often stopping the progression of nearsightedness & astigmatism related to Keratoconus. There is little recovery time and many patients are active after only a day or two following the procedure.

C-3R®:

What is C3-R®-

C3-R® is 30 minute treatment for Keratoconus also known as Corneal Collagen Cross-linking with Riboflavin. This treatment uses specialized drops which when used with a special UV light will strengthen the cornea over 3-4 months time.

C3-R® Procedure-

C3-R® treatment takes about 30 minutes and requires little after care. This non-invasive procedure involved the use of specialized drops and UV light. The medicated drops when activated by the UV light strengthen the fibers of the cornea. Improving the patients quality of vision over time. Most patients state that they can see much better in as little as a week after the procedure is done.

Though these treatments are relatively new they have generated positive results that last for 3-5 years and counting. These new treatments are giving much hope to patients with Keratoconus. And in some cases they have reversed damage caused by the disease. Now living with Keratoconus can still mean a great quality of life!
