Living With Keratoconus: Positive Results That Last

Losing our vision is scary. Mainly because we fear things we do not know. However there are ways to stop the progression of Keratoconus, and sometimes reverse its damage. In the past years when someone developed Keratoconus the prognosis was eventual blindness, and doctors tried to delay it as much as possible. Quite often patients were given Cornea Transplants.

Now there are many options for people with Keratoconus. Cornea Transplants or Blindness are not an eventuality. So what is this miracle treatment you ask? The procedures that have been developed for the Treatment of Keratoconus in recent years are INTACS, and C3-R®.

INTACS:

What are INTACS?-

Approved by the FDA for treatment of Nearsightedness and Astigmatism associated with Keratoconus these small inserts are used when contacts & glasses no longer provide functional vision or have been uncomfortable to wear. INTACS are corneal inserts used to stabilize the cornea and improve the shape of the cornea providing better vision and comfort in glasses or contacts.

INTACS procedure-

The procedure itself takes little time, and is significantly less invasive than the prior corneal transplant treatment option. INTACS reshape the cornea giving a better quality of vision and often stopping the progression of nearsightedness & astigmatism related to Keratoconus. There is little recovery time and many patients are active after only a day or two following the procedure.

C-3R®:

What is C3-R®-

C3-R® is 30 minute treatment for Keratoconus also known as Corneal Collagen Cross-linking with Riboflavin. This treatment uses specialized drops which when used with a special UV light will strengthen the cornea over 3-4 months time.

C3-R® Procedure-

C3-R® treatment takes about 30 minutes and requires little after care. This non-invasive procedure involved the use of specialized drops and UV light. The medicated drops when activated by the UV light strengthen the fibers of the cornea. Improving the patients quality of vision over time. Most patients state that they can see much better in as little as a week after the procedure is done.

Though these treatments are relatively new they have generated positive results that last for 3-5 years and counting. These new treatments are giving much hope to patients with Keratoconus. And in some cases they have reversed damage caused by the disease. Now living with Keratoconus can still mean a great quality of life!
