I, Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler, was in Vancouver last Thursday for the Olympic press conference with the United States Men’s Bobsled team. “Why would an eye surgeon be attending an Olympic press conference?” is probably going through your mind. No, I didn’t give up my day job to join the U.S. Bobsled team. Patient Steve Holcomb and his story has become one of the most miraculous stories in the Olympics.

Steve is the driver of the U.S. Bobsled team’s top sled called “The Night Train”. He became legally blind two years ago due to a degenerative cornea condition called Keratoconus which just about forced him to retire and give up the sport. The U.S. Olympic Committee and the Bobsled team refused to let him give up. That’s when they discovered me. I had the honor of helping Steve over his keratoconus condition with C3-R along with corrective lens implants. C3-R saved Steve’s eyesight.

Steve then went on to win the World Bobsled Championship gold– a U.S. first in 50 years.

There lies the reason for me being part of the press conference last week. There were plenty of TV crews and journalists.

To see the full details about Steve’s miracle story, please click: www.BoxerWachler.com

In 10 days, Steve and the Night Train will be going for Gold. I will be there cheering for Steve and will be posting updates on this blog and tweeting at www.twitter.com/drboxerwachler

Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler has been working on a procedure for the past 13 years to remove the bloodshot appearance of eyes and the yellowing and brown pigmentated spots on the whites of the eyes. Within the last year the process has been named I-BRITE. To many, making the eyes whiter may simply seem like a cosmetic procedure. The opposite could not be more true.

Unbeknownst to those without the condition, people who live for many years with discolored whites of the eyes ahve the emotional effect of a more traditional ‘disfigurement’, such as missing a limb. The reason is that people with chronic bloodshot eyes (or other eye discolorations) are constantly being asked questions like, “Are you tired? You look like you didn’t get good sleep.” or even “Are you doing drugs, smoking pot or drinking a lot of alcohol?”

Even if others don’t ask, the non-verbals are there when people take a closer look at the eyes and likely view them differently or with suspicion. After many years self-esteem and self-confidence can be eroded in some patients. Moreover, doctors simply dismiss the patients’ concerns with “nothing can be done - you just have to live with it.”

I-BRITE is having the smae type of life-changing impact as procedurs such as LASIK. In other words, it’s not strictly about cosmetics; it’s really about removing a long-standing stigma that is freeing and boosting to confidence and esteem.

TIP 1 - Personally meet with the LASIK surgeon BEFORE day of surgery

This is important to see if there is a comfort level with the patient and surgeon. Is the surgeon rushed and seems like there are more important matters he/she needs to get to? If you have follow up questions, how easy is it to reach surgeon – is surgeon email or cell phone made available for concerns or questions? People generally know their gut feeling when they meet someone else. If you get a bad gut feeling, listen to it and seek another doctor.

Tip 2 - Research the surgeon’s experience

Run a Google search on the surgeon to find out if there are numerous complaints. Look up the surgeon on your state medical board to see if there are any issues with the medical license.

Tip 3 - Seek third-party assessments of surgeon and lasik center

Are there just a few happy patients on the website or is there a plethora of patients commenting? Social media sites allow unbias, unfiltered patient assessments of lasik center.

Tip 4 - Evaluate the lasik center in person

When you visit the lasik center, is it clean and tidy or does it look like the kitchen of a “greasy spoon” diner? The latter might be fine for bacon and eggs, but not for eye surgery. Are the staff caring, polite, and genuinely interested in helping you? Everything in a medical practice trickles from the top down, so if the staff are rude and insensitive you can bet the doctor probably is like that too.

Tip 5 - Make Sure these Four Essential Tests Are Part of the Evaluation

1) dry eye check – if dry eyes are found on lasik testing and NOT addressed, it increases risk of dry eye problems after lasik

2) pupil size check – some studies have shown increase risk of halos and glare from large pupils, while other studies have failed to show an association. Either way, pupil checking is a must.

3) corneal mapping (topography) – the shape of the cornea can eliminate a patient from being a lasik candidate and indicate appropriate alternative procedures like PRK or Visian ICL. Lasik done on a misshapen cornea that was not evaluated with corneal mapping can lead to double vision.

4) corneal thickness (pachymetry) – lasik on corneas that are too thin can weaken the strength of the cornea causing it to bulge out and turn into a condition called keratoconus that may lead to triple or quadruple images in vision.

According to USA Today & the Associated press about 700,000 Americans undergo laser eye surgery annually. According to the Association of Ophthalmology 95-99% of all Lasik procedures were successful with no complications. Over 12 million people to date have had corrective laser eye surgery.

The Boxer Wachler Vision Institute provides its patients with the highest quality of care. They have the most up to date medical equipment, caring and attentive staff, and a great surgeon to offer each person that walks through their door. The experience of working with them is like no other, but don’t take our word for it simply listen to the words of these patients:

Meet Michael-

Michael had a RK procedure done in 1986. RK was a procedure that quickly was abandoned with advent of lasers. RK was a procedure that involved making multiple incisions in the eye and over time those incisions would weaken causing the vision to change. In 1995 his vision started to breakdown and it became more and more difficult for him to function with normal daily activities. Dr. Boxer Wachler recommended that Michael undergo a PRK, now his vision is 20/20. Michael is no longer wearing glasses or contacts.

Michael says:

“I highly recommend these procedures for your vision needs, and I am thoroughly happy with my results”.

Meet Mathew Bencha- MMA Fighter

Mathew Bencha is an amateur fighter and was turning pro. However fighters can not fight with any eye glass wear or glasses and without it Mathew would not be able to see. After speaking with Dr. Boxer Wachler it was recommended he have PRK done, it would be the best procedure given his field of work and there would be no incision.

After the procedure Matt stated it took him about 4-6 weeks to fully recover, but he is absolutely thrilled with his results. Matt no longer needs to wear his contacts any longer and will be fighting in the Pros in no time.

Matt Says:

“If you are getting the PRK, I recommend Dr. Boxer Wachler ”

PRK and No Cut LASEK:

Many of us are familiar with Lasik surgery. And for those of us who couldn’t get Lasik because your cornea thickness was too thin or you just had too many reservations on the procedure altogether PRK and No-Cut LASEK could be your answer. Both PRK and No-Cut LASEK can treat people with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It is a short procedure usually only taking 5-10 minutes to complete.

The procedures simply involve the doctor moving the surface layer of skin from the cornea and using a laser to reshape it. The new layer of skin grows back within a few days with little to no pain. In this procedure there is no flap creation making it much less involved, and an even faster recovery time.

Who Can Benefit from PRK and LASEK:

Patients that are apprehensive about Lasik

Patients that have thinner Cornea thickness and are good candidates for Lasik

Patients that have had previous RK (Radial Keratotomy)

Benefits of PK and LASEK:

Procedure is less involved

Is minimally invasive for Laser procedure

Can Correct height perceptions compared to Lasik

Dr. Boxer Wachler has performed many PK and LASEK procedures. If you have any additional questions you would like to ask him or his staff you can visit: www.boxerwachler.com

Keratoconus has revered a very heavy reputation. And in the grand skim of things Keratoconus is a very serious condition. However thanks to new technologies and Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler of the Boxer Wachler Vision Institute there is hope for patients that suffer with Keratoconus. Every year treatments are improving and showing more and more positive results.

Currently there are a couple of procedures that can improve your vision, stop regression, and some reports say they have reversed damage of Keratoconus. This is a great weight lifted from the shoulders of those suffering from Keratoconus.

Below are some treatments to look forward to for suffers of Keratoconus:

INTACS:

INTACS are tiny inserts that are placed inside your cornea to improve the damaged or irregular shape of your cornea creating clearer vision. Initially INTACS were designed to treat nearsightedness however there have been great results with the use of INTACS on Keratoconus patients.

C3-R®:

C3-R® involves the use of Medicated drops into the affected eye, then with use of a UV light the medication [Riboflavin] is activated. The medication continues to strengthen the fibers of the cornea improving your cornea over the next 3-4 months. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and provides many benefits.

Benefits of C3-R®:

Procedure takes 30 min

Strengthens cornea which can improve eye sight

Can reverse previous damage to cornea

Pain free

Non- invasive procedure

Over the past decade more and more procedures are being developed in improving the quality of life for those suffering from Keratoconus.

In the past treatments for Keratoconus generally meant an invasive procedure that required transplant of the cornea. A new day has dawned and the treatments for Keratoconus are showing positive & incredible results without the invasive technique of a Corneal Transplants. In the past receiving a corneal transplant often meant longer recovery times, possible infections, and pain after surgery. Now we have a treatment that can slow or stop the progression of Keratoconus, and has shown reversal of damage Keratoconus has caused to the eye with little to no recovery time or pain.

This new treatment? C3-R®. Also known as Corneal Collagen Cross-linking with Riboflavin. This simple procedure takes only about 30 minutes, can be performed in the doctors office and has little to no recovery time. C3-R® has shown excellent promise in treatments for Keratoconus. In some cases this procedure has even repaired damage that has already been done to the cornea by Keratoconus.

C3-R® is performed by applying a special solution to loosen the epithelium and installing the Riboflavin drops, then a special UV light is used to activate the medication. The total procedure takes around 30 minutes and continues to strengthen the cornea over 3 to 6months.

It is performed two ways Epithelium on and Epithelium off. The Boxer Wachler Vision Institute uses the Epithelium on technique. This means a solution is used to loosen the Epithelium so the Riboflavin drops will penetrate to the cornea. Since the Epithelium is not removed there is little to no pain during recovery. The effectiveness of removing the epithelium has not been proved to improve the results. The procedure with the epithelium still intact however proves to be less painful for the patients, the cornea is strengthened and the progression of Keratoconus is halted.

Benefits of Using Epithelium On Procedure-(Trans Epithelial) C3-R® for Treatment:

Reduced Recovery time

Less Pain

Non-Invasive

Keratoconus Halted
