Why Blurred Vision Means It’s Time to See the Eye Doctor

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

Several of us get blurred vision daily, thousands have blurred vision at some point in their life. While several of us think that blurred vision is not a sign to be alarmed it could be a sign of an underlying condition. Getting it check out early can often prevent serious problems later.

When you are visiting your doctor it is best to let he/she know that you are having problems with blurred vision they can do a much more thorough check of your vision and tell you if you should be concerned.

Below you will find several reasons you maybe experiencing blurred vision:

Blurred vision is a symptom of Diabetes: Over 50% of those with Diabetes Melitius are unaware that they have it. The diagnosis can be done with simple tests through blood, or urine. Many people dismiss this symptom because it doesn’t generally accompany pain or stop you from seeing necessarily. However if there is a chance that it could be diabetes or you have a family history it is wise to tell your eye care professional or primary care physician.

Blurred vision is a symptom of Keratoconus: Keratoconus is a progressive condition that can lead to decline in vision. While Keratoconus is a serious diagnosis if found early it can be controlled. New technologies have recently helped those with Keratoconus stop the progression and in some cases reverse the damage done by this progressive disease. Reporting your symptoms to your eye care professional can catch it when there is time to improve the quality of your vision.

Blurred Vision can also be a symptoms of:

Cataracts

Glaucoma

Nearsightedness

Farsightedness

Astigmatism

Migraines

Dry Eyes

Although many of these conditions seem serious blurred vision can also be a sign of something as simple as dry eyes. Getting a regular yearly eye exam will help detect problems before they become issues. The true is many of these conditions can be corrected and treated by your general eye care professional. Determining the Benefits of No Cut LASEK: More Alternatives for Keratoconus

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

LASIK procedures have not been for everyone. Many people feel that LASIK has to many risks. And while not all medicine is an exact science, recent advancements in procedures have done well in being successful and lowering patients concerns about risks including No Cut LASEK.

It has also proven to work well for those who are not good candidates for LASIK procedures. There has also been a good success rate in those who have had corneal transplants or RK (Radial Keratotomy).

There are several benefits to the No Cut LASEK procedure including:

Less invasive than Lasik

Procedure takes only a matter of minutes

No cutting

Less Recovery

Less invasive than other procedures

No cut LASEK is similar to the PRK procedure and takes only 5-10 minutes involving the removal and replacement of the out layer of cells to allow for the of a flap of the cornea. Patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism have seen success with this procedure. In addition to that patients with Keratoconus have benefited when it was combined with other procedures like the Holcomb C3-R ®.

While many of us are skeptical to have any procedure done, the No Cut LASEK procedure has been successful and needed less recovery than the traditional PRK procedures available today. Deciding to get any procedure is a difficult one, but talking with your eye care professional can help you determine if you are a good candidate for this procedure.

Dealing With Diabetic Retinopathy

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

3 Tips You Should Know

If your asking yourself what is Diabetic Retinopathy you are not alone. While it is the leading cause of Blindness in adults in the US, many still don’t know what it is. Diabetic Retinopathy is a disease of the eyes caused by high levels of sugar in the blood. The sugar damages the blood vessels in the eyes causing vision loss, and sometimes pain.

There are 4 stages of Diabetic Retinopathy:

Mild Nonproliferative Retinopathy

Moderate Nonproliferative Retinopathy

Severe Nonproliferative Retinopathy

Proliferative Retinopathy

In the first two stages the Retinopathy causes the blood vessels to swell and become blocked. During the last two stages the body grows more blood vessels that are thinner and the walls can leak causing bleeding in the eye. In the most severe form blindness can occur.

Below are 3 tips you should know about Diabetic Retinopathy:

Be sure to get a dilated eye exam every 12 months: Getting your eyes checked regularly will help catch diabetic Retinopathy at and early stage.

You can develop both Proliferative Retinopathy and modular edema: These two stages don’t always have symptoms however they can put you at risk for vision loss.

You can reduce your risk of vision loss by 95% with treatment: Making sure that your eyes are examined and you get early treatment can reduce your risk of blindness considerably.

Advancements in Treatments For Keratoconus: Explores CK

Monday, November 15th, 2010

A diagnoses of Keratoconus can be devastating to anyone however many advancements in the treatment of Keratoconus have brought new hope to Keratoconus patients including CK. CK or Conductive Keratoplasty is relatively new but was FDA approved in 2004. The treatment is used to help with irregular astigmatism and uses heat from radio waves instead of a laser to reshape the cornea.

In patients with Keratoconus the cornea starts to become irregular shaped which distorts the vision of the patient progressively over the course of years until the patient’s vision becomes so distorted it is difficult to see even with contacts or glasses. With this treatment the cornea is reshaped giving clearer vision to the patient and reducing the distorted vision.

CK often takes no longer than 5 minutes per eye and has a short recovery time for the patient with minimal discomfort. Patient are advised to take a 4-5 hour nap after the procedure and upon wakening many patients have noticeably improved vision.

Below are a few Symptoms of Keratoconus:

Excessive Rubbing of the eyes with or without itchy eyes
Visual disturbances or distortion
Glares or halos
Squinting to see
Seeing Double

Keratoconus affects thousands of people everyday. Understanding your treatment options for the treatment of Keratoconus and knowing that there is hope for you is the most important part of living with this progressive disease. Getting help early can reduce the damage of Keratoconus to your vision.

Benefits of PRK or No Cut Lasek: Alternative Treatment Options for Keratoconus

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Many people over the years have grown skeptical of Classic Lasik procedures that though the procedure has advanced in many ways don’t feel comfortable with the option of Lasik in any form. PRK or No Cut LASEK can benefit those with apprehension over Lasik, or have thinner corneas and are not good candidates for the Lasik procedure all together. These procedures have also benefited those who have had RK (Radial Keratotomy) or Cornea Transplant.

Individuals with Keratoconus who have had their Keratoconus stabilized by Holcomb C3R ®, but have a residual can sometimes consider this less invasive laser treatment.

Below are more benefits of PRK or No Cut LASEK:

Less Invasive than Lasik procedure

Avoids deep flap created during traditional Lasik that could weaken the eye

Procedure takes about 5-10 minutes

No cuts

The PRK or No Cut LASEK procedure takes only 5-10 minutes per eye and involves the doctor removing a small layer of the surface of the cornea to reshape it. No flap is created, meaning no cuts and allows for peace of mind for many patients. The procedure can treat patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, mild prescription after other Keratoconus treatments, or astigmatism.

The PRK or No Cut LASEK procedure has many benefits and can help those who are to afraid to have traditional Lasik procedure or do not make a good candidate for that procedure.

Olympian Bobsled Driver Steve Holcomb has Gold in Sight After Overcoming Keratoconus

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

I, Dr. Brian Boxer Wachler, was in Vancouver last Thursday for the Olympic press conference with the United States Men’s Bobsled team.  “Why would an eye surgeon be attending an Olympic press conference?” is probably going through your mind.  No, I didn’t give up my day job to join the U.S. Bobsled team.  Patient Steve Holcomb and his story has become one of the most miraculous stories in the Olympics.

Steve is the driver of the U.S. Bobsled team’s top sled called “The Night Train”.  He became legally blind two years ago due to a degenerative cornea condition called Keratoconus which just about forced him to retire and give up the sport.  The U.S. Olympic Committee and the Bobsled team refused to let him give up.  That’s when they discovered me.  I had the honor of helping Steve over his keratoconus condition with C3-R along with corrective lens implants.  C3-R saved Steve’s eyesight.

Steve then went on to win the World Bobsled Championship gold– a U.S. first in 50 years.

There lies the reason for me being part of the press conference last week.  There were plenty of TV crews and journalists.

To see the full details about Steve’s miracle story, please click: www.BoxerWachler.com

In 10  days, Steve and the Night Train will be going for Gold.  I will be there cheering for Steve and will be posting updates on this blog and tweeting at www.twitter.com/drboxerwachler

Every year treatments are improving and showing more and more positive results.

Currently there are a couple of procedures that can improve your vision, stop regression, and some reports say they have reversed damage of Keratoconus. This is a great weight lifted from the shoulders of those suffering from Keratoconus.

Below are some treatments to look forward to for suffers of Keratoconus:

INTACS:

INTACS are tiny inserts that are placed inside your cornea to improve the damaged or irregular shape of your cornea creating clearer vision. Initially INTACS were designed to treat nearsightedness however there have been great results with the use of INTACS on Keratoconus patients.

C3-R®:

C3-R® involves the use of Medicated drops into the affected eye, then with use of a UV light the medication [Riboflavin] is activated. The medication continues to strengthen the fibers of the cornea improving your cornea over the next 3-4 months. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and provides many benefits.

Benefits of C3-R®:

Procedure takes 30 min

Strengthens cornea which can improve eye sight

Can reverse previous damage to cornea

Pain free

Non- invasive procedure

C3-R Pioneering New Treatments in Keratoconus

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

In the past treatments for Keratoconus generally meant an invasive procedure that required transplant of the cornea. A new day has dawned and the treatments for Keratoconus are showing positive & incredible results without the invasive technique of a Corneal Transplants. In the past receiving a corneal transplant often meant longer recovery times, possible infections, and pain after surgery. Now we have a treatment that can slow or stop the progression of Keratoconus, and has shown reversal of damage Keratoconus has caused to the eye with little to no recovery time or pain.

This new treatment? C3-R®. Also known as Corneal Collagen Cross-linking with Riboflavin. This simple procedure takes only about 30 minutes, can be performed in the doctors office and has little to no recovery time. C3-R® has shown excellent promise in treatments for Keratoconus. In some cases this procedure has even repaired damage that has already been done to the cornea by Keratoconus.

C3-R® is performed by applying a special solution to loosen the epithelium and installing the Riboflavin drops, then a special UV light is used to activate the medication. The total procedure takes around 30 minutes and continues to strengthen the cornea over 3 to 6months.

It is performed two ways Epithelium on and Epithelium off. The Boxer Wachler Vision Institute uses the Epithelium on technique. This means a solution is used to loosen the Epithelium so the Riboflavin drops will penetrate to the cornea. Since the Epithelium is not removed there is little to no pain during recovery. The effectiveness of removing the epithelium has not been proved to improve the results. The procedure with the epithelium still intact however proves to be less painful for the patients, the cornea is strengthened and the progression of Keratoconus is halted.

Benefits of Using Epithelium On Procedure-(Trans Epithelial) C3-R® for Treatment:

Reduced Recovery time

Less Pain

Non-Invasive

Keratoconus Halted

Increased improvement of vision
